Moving Guide

Labor-Only vs. Full-Service Moving

The first decision is who will provide and drive the moving vehicle. Labor-only help can fit a rental truck or moving container; a move that includes transport requires a different scope. Compare the work involved before you request a quote.

What labor-only moving means

With labor-only help, you arrange the truck or container and request help loading, unloading, or both. You remain responsible for the vehicle or container booking and transport arrangements. Tell the crew the vehicle type, loading location, inventory and access conditions so the requested help can be reviewed.

Labor-only does not automatically include packing, supplies, furniture disassembly, vehicle driving or equipment. Confirm each item in the quote rather than assuming that every moving-related task is included. See moving labor and loading help for what that scope covers.

What a move with transport means

A move with transport combines the agreed moving labor with the vehicle and travel between the confirmed locations. The phrase full-service can mean different things to different providers. Packing, materials, unpacking and reassembly still need to appear in the scope if you want them included. Residential moving covers a house, apartment or condo move that includes transport.

For a longer route, share the pickup and delivery locations and ask the team to confirm service availability. Do not assume that a local service offer includes every long-distance route — long-distance inquiries are confirmed per route.

Which option fits your situation?

  • You already have a rental truck or container: start with a labor-only inquiry, including its size, availability and loading location.
  • You need help with transport as well as carrying: start with a residential moving inquiry and describe both stops.
  • You are unsure how much will fit: share the inventory and photos before committing to a vehicle. Confirm suitability with the vehicle provider and the moving team.
  • You need packing too: identify the rooms and items, then ask for packing as an explicit part of the quote.

Neither choice is automatically cheaper for every job. Compare the total agreed scope, including your rental, fuel, supplies, access arrangements and other quoted charges, rather than comparing a labor rate alone.

Details to send before either kind of move

  • Preferred date
  • Inventory and photos
  • Stairs and elevator reservations
  • Walking distance from the vehicle
  • Heavy or bulky items
  • Requested packing or disassembly
  • Which locations need help

If your plans change, send the new details before the job.

Before you confirm

Check what is included and excluded, who is responsible for each task, the pricing basis, payment requirements and the applicable cancellation and damage-reporting process. Availability and written terms need confirmation from the team. A quote request is not a confirmed booking. Our common questions cover booking terms and preparation.
