Pro Tips for a Stress-Free Move

After 10+ years and over 1,500 moves, we've learned a thing or two about what makes moving day go smoothly. Here's our best advice — straight from the crew.

Start Planning 6–8 Weeks Ahead

Create a moving timeline as early as possible. Book your moving company, order packing supplies, and start decluttering room by room. The earlier you plan, the smoother the day will go.

Pack Room by Room — And Label Everything

Pack one room at a time and label every box with its destination room and a brief list of contents. Use different colored tape or markers for each room so movers know exactly where every box goes.

Use the Right Packing Materials

Invest in sturdy, double-walled boxes for heavy items like books and dishes. Use wardrobe boxes for hanging clothes (no re-folding needed). Bubble wrap, packing paper, and furniture blankets protect fragile items — don't skimp here.

Create a 'First Night' Box

Pack a box with essentials you'll need immediately: toiletries, a change of clothes, phone chargers, basic tools, toilet paper, paper towels, snacks, and coffee. Keep this box with you — not in the moving truck.

Pack a 'Kitchen Open First' Box

Similar to the first night box, but kitchen-specific: plates, cups, utensils, a pot or pan, dish soap, and paper towels. You'll thank yourself when you can make breakfast on day one without unpacking the whole kitchen.

Take Photos Before Disassembling Furniture

Before taking anything apart, snap photos of the assembled piece from multiple angles — especially wiring connections for electronics and TV mounts. These reference photos will save you hours of frustration on the other end.

Measure Doorways and Hallways Before Moving Day

Measure large furniture and the doorways, stairwells, and hallways it needs to pass through — at both your old and new place. Know ahead of time if you'll need to disassemble anything or use an alternate entrance.

Notify Utilities and Change Your Address Early

Schedule utility shut-off at your old place and activation at your new one at least two weeks ahead. Submit a change of address with USPS, update your address with banks and subscriptions, and don't forget to transfer or set up internet service.
